The need to identify the diseases of the heart is an important process in Reviving our Islamic Spirit. This series aims to identify some of the diseases of the heart and remedies which we can implement to cure ourselves from these diseases.
Why is the Incredible Hulk the Weakest Super Hero?
Imagine Abdullah on a burning hot day! His been at work since 6am and his finishes work at 8pm.He hasn’t slept well and he hasn’t eaten well and he is just extremely tired. He finally gets to go home and is stuck in bumper to bumper traffic behind an old oriental lady. To top it all off this young teenager comes up right next to him with blasting music and cuts right him off.
He gets home and his wife has this amazing smile and says Assalamu Alaykum Wa raghmatullahi wa Barakatu. Abdullah looks at her and says SHUTUP! He goes up stairs and slams the door. WHAT JUST HAPPENED.
I want you think of the Incredible Hulk. The incredible hulk is generally thought of as this strong superhero but in reality, is he as such?
The Prophet (saw) said that “The strong among you are not those who are able to physically put others down but strong is the one who can control himself in times of anger.”
Allah created anger in human beings to serve 2 main purposes:
- As a defence Mechanism
- As a motivator
The vast majority of people use anger as a destructive tool instead.
- When we get angry we get counter productive to our course.
- We make things worst than what they started out to be in the beginning
What actually happens when people get angry? Look at the case of Abdullah his anger built up:
Step by step till the time came when he exploded at the wrong time.
- Instead of reciprocating the positive emotions expressed by his wife, he ended up exploding up at her when she really did not deserve it.
- Had he dealt with his anger each step of the way, releasing the negative energy, channelling that energy towards something else, he would not have exploded.
The second type of anger that we deal with is the blitz anger or the sudden anger
- This type of anger happens at the spur of the moment and you just have this tensing feeling in your body where your adrenaline is flowing and you just have this burning desire to say and do something which you know you are going to regret.
- This usually happens when you have a young child who is about to be attacked or when someone insults your mother
- Now this anger is not bad but what makes it destructive is what you do with that anger.
- What we want to do is make a conscious positive decision and a conscious positive action with this anger
There are several ways you can go about controlling your anger:
1. Remember Allah (swt) {Istiada} – Surah Kahf v 24
(s18-v24)Except (with the saying), “If Allâh will!” And remember your Lord when you forget and say: “It may be that my Lord guides me unto a nearer way of truth than this.”
Ikrimah (ra), one of the students of ibn abbas (ra), said that this means remembering Allah (swt) when you get angry.
The Prophet (saw) taught us that when you get angry you should say A’oothoobilla-himina-shaytaan-nirajim.
2. You should change the environment that you are in.
- For example if you got angry in the kitchen, leave the kitchen and go to your bedroom.
3. Go and perform wudhu
- Wudhu has this cooling element that helps you to cool down and calm down and just helps you to relax
- Taking wudhu before you go to bed sometimes helps the person to fall asleep quicker because they are more relaxed and at ease.
- We should also ensure that our wudhu is performed properly.
4. Changing your Physiology
- When you get angry your body starts to tense up and tighten up and you have this urge to stand up and be upright and straight.
- But fight that urge, If you standing sit down if you sitting sown then lay down and if you cant do anything else starting rolling over and about.
5. Think about the Incredible Hulk
- If you look at the images of the Incredible Hulk you will notice that he never smiles.
- When you angry you just can’t smile.
- So next time you’re angry try smiling
6. Count down from a hundred backwards
- Do this loud for an intimidating effect (JOKE)
Several last points we would like to share:
What brings about anger in us? There are two main factors that come into play with anger:
1. Eating and sleeping
- If you do not eat and sleep well then you will have a very frustrating and annoying day.
- In order to avoid that make sure you eat and sleep well.
- If you did not then avoid any confrontations
2. Everything that your mind intakes
- Your mind naturally absorbs your surroundings and it will absorb everything that you hear and see.
- So if you putting anger and hatred in your mind that is exactly what it is going to output as well.
- You do not want o be in angry environment, watch tv content depicting anger, listen to anger on radio or music
- All these will manifest themselves in your actions wether you like it or not.
- So abstain from those things
Repercussions of anger include:
- Divorce
- Murder
- Violence
- Vulgarity
Anger is not that way of a Muslim. A Muslim is against anger rather than for it. Use your intellect for positive ways to control the anger and remember that Allah (swt), prepared Paradise for the mutaqin. The Mutaqin are given a description in surah Al-Imran v134:
(s3-v134)Those who spend [in Allâh's Cause - deeds of charity, alms, etc.] in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allâh loves Al-Muhsinûn (the good doers).
May Allah (swt) grant us the Taufiqe to Control our anger to effect positive actions.

I think you interpreting The Incredible Hulk off the comercialised version. The Incredible Hulk’s trigger for his brute strength is a metaphysical strength and weakness. It’s his continuous battle with this internal dilemma that manifests itself into the external realm. Anyway, I won’t go too much into detail. I am an avid graphic novelist fan.
Otherwise, I understand how you are using the analogy and from which angle. Just be careful with the utilisation of analogies as they may end ups as the very sword to pierce one’s argument.
I apologise for and grammatical errors. I am typing in quite a rush as I am on my way to help give a class.
Good islamic values given in the article.
