Two psychologists walk by one another and the first one says “Hi” and the second one responds “I wonder what he meant by that?”
Allot of the times when people look at us in a funny way and say things we do not know how to interpret, we hold it in the worst possible interpretation.
This in the atrabic language is known as “Soo As Thaan” and something Allah (swt) clearly warns us against. Allah (swt) says in surah Hujaraat:
O you who believe! Avoid much suspicions, indeed some suspicions are sins
So here is the clear prerogative why do you wnt to stay away from suspicion, because it it leads to sin. What sins does it lead to? Allah (swt) goes on to tell us
And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting) . And fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful. (S.49 – V.12)
These are some of the sins that evil suspicions leads to. So now what are some of the ways which you can avoid evil suspicion:
- Holding yourself accountable
- Learn to doubt yourself when it come to others.
- This example is seen in the Seerah of the Prophet (saw) when the Muslims were on the battle field and Muslim killed a disbeliever or so it seemed because when he was under the sword, he tool the Shahada, but ht person thought he was taking the shahada just because he thought this would save him so he killed him anyway. Then he went to the Prophet (saw) and the Prophet (saw) rebuked him for what he had done. He said did you open his heart and see what was inside? And the Prophet (saw) continued to ask him this until the companion said I wish this was the day I accepted Islam. Meaning that he wished he never had to go through this.
- So if you doubt yourself and think about what you say or what you about to do based upon your suspicion, do not act upon it just doubt it. Bi-ithnillah hi ta Allah you will save yourself.
- Think about how you would like to be treated by others
- Allot of the times we want others to have the benefit of the doubt for us. We nat them to think good of us, hold us in a positive light
- Now just as we would like to be treated like that we should treat others in that form and fashion as well.
- Keep your conscious clear of evil deeds
- For example people who backbite, what do they think about other people? They assume and presume that people are backbiting about them as well.
- Same thing about people who steal, cheat, lie and deceive and all those other things.
- Now individuals who do not embark on such evil deeds, they do not have this guilty conscious in their mind so one of the ways of staying away from having evil suspicion is to just me a good individual. Be an easy going person, be happy do not commit sin and Bi-ithnillah hi ta Allah things will work out fine for you.
Now how does one apply this to Allah (swt)
Allot of the times we think of Allah (swt) as this Jabbar, someone that is always wanting to conquer us and do these evil things to us. But Allah (swt) clearly says to us, through the Prophet (saw),
“Indeed I am as a slave presumes of me” so those who presume good of Allah (swt) Allah is good to them and those who presume evil of Allah (swt) then indeed evil is in store for them.
In conclusion we would like to end off with a beautiful point and example from the Prophet (saw) of how he explained to his companions how much Allah (swt) actually loves us and how much hope and mercy we need to have in Allah (swt). The story of a woman who had lost her child while she was in the market. She was running around from child to child picking them up holding it closely and when it wasn’t her child she would let it go. Until finally, she found her child and embraced it and did not want to let it go.
The Prophet (saw) said to the companions “O my companions do you see this woman? Do you think she will ever throw her child in to the fire? ” they said “By Allah o Messenger of Allah she will never do such a thing” and the prophet (saw) said “indeed Allah (swt) is more loving more compassionate more merciful towards His slave then the mother is towards her Child ” Allah (swt) love you, he wants good for you you just need to realise it and hope it from Him.
